“Il faut cultiver notre jardin” - Voltaire
As disposable income is increasing in China, India, Russia, Latin America and some parts of Africa, global trade patterns are beginning to shift. At the same time, trade and responsibility are key themes that are preoccupying not just manufacturers and retailers, but also the chain in between. Nearly everyone wants to be green and responsible. But the real cost of sustainability, both in terms of production and distribution, remains a grey area. Transport by sea or air and road or rail may be seen as part of the ‘green cost’ problem. But could it also be part of the solution? The role of cold chain is more important than perhaps the value of business transactions may suggest. We are talking about some of the essentials in life – health and nutrition. Improving logistics may therefore not be just a luxury, but fast becoming a necessity.

Food and heath are not just commodities. They are a way of living, including for those engaged in this business on a day-to-day basis. The amount of waste in this business is exorbitant. Waste reduction is therefore becoming more important than ever, not only at production level but right through the system.
The shipper panel will look at ways of challenging some of the cherished truths. What are logistics costs really? How can everyone be ‘adding value’ in the cold chain? Why are prices going up, but returns (to growers) going down? Tackling waste – how? Producers and exporters need to regain the initiative. Speakers in this session will debate how to go about this.

Although some of the transport capacity issues seem to have been resolved at least for the time shipping companies and airlines could continue to struggle with the after-effects of overcapacity experienced last year. Meanwhile opinions remain divided over whether the much trumpeted container capacity shortage really extends to reefer boxes. Despite certain similarities between the airfreight and oceanfreight segment there are also many more differences. Lack of space on aircraft is nothing new. The ability to tackle delays and to react more quickly to changes in market conditions could become even more important in 2011.
Careful capacity management combined with developing long-term relationships may be the way forward, both for today and to ensure the longer-term efficiency of the cold transport chain.
Could notions of sea-air and intermodality maintain or even develop their market share in the future?
